Love on the Spectrum has been deemed “heartwarming” by some, and controversial by others since season three arrived. The new episodes saw some changes to its cast, including the absence of Kaelynn and the addition of newbies, including Pari, and Madison. People’s lives have changed because of the show. But after some thought it was “problematic,” there’s been some major backlash hurled at the show which has prompted some big changes to filming itself.

Love on the Spectrum changed its introductions

Love on the Spectrum has a unique casting process, and a format that most people have come to adore.

However, the Netflix show has also faced backlash for season three as well as past episodes.

The show’s producer, Cian O’Clery, explained in an interview with Mashable that some changes had to be made to Love on the Spectrum after its first season.

When asked about the “discomfort” some people felt over “the format that the show uses when introducing dates,” Cian explained:

“I stole that from Amélie! It was a nice way to introduce people that was fun.”

Viewer criticism came after a voiceover on the series shares some of the likes and dislikes of the participants over b-roll of those things. But, some thought that it “infantilised the hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity that autistic people experience.”

Cian added of the show’s US version: “There was some criticism of some of the likes and dislikes being related to someone’s autism, for example, a sound or smell. So we did change that to make sure that we didn’t include those things… which is a shame because that still says something about them. We can see where people are coming from, but it had absolutely nothing to do with hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity.”

Love on the Spectrum soundtrack endured changes

As well as switching up the way the cast members are introduced, Cian explained how more changes had to be made to Love on the Spectrum.

This time, he and his team had to rethink the soundtrack of the episodes:

“Some people thought the music was a little bit silly at times, but if you look at some dating shows, a show called First Dates in the UK, the music is sweet and fun…”

He continued: “I think that was people interpreting the music [as having] something to do with the people we’re following, whereas it was dating show music [to me].

“But we’re always very conscious; we don’t want to offend people, so we do our best. And if we can improve, we do.”

We were all totally here for the moment when Connor opted to add in a song of his choice in season three. He asked Cian to play Cats in the Cradle as he walked away during one scene which was totally iconic.

Rounding off, Cian added how he always tried to do his best in telling the cast’s stories: “It is kind of a strange kind of responsibility in a way that a show like this is doing really well, and that people are seeing it.

“I don’t take that lightly, that responsibility of telling these stories, but all I can do is try and tell them in the most authentic and truthful way possible.”
