Hilaria Baldwin has finally spoken out on rumors her Spanish accent is “fake”. She stars alongside her husband, Alec Baldwin, on their new TLC family reality show, The Baldwins, where she admitted she’s been to “dark places” as a result of the online criticism about her accent. But the time has come that she’s officially put the speculation to rest.
Hilaria Baldwin faced criticism over her Spanish accent
Hilaria has stayed pretty schtum when she’s been hit with “fake Spanish accent” claims in the past. She was raised in a Spanish-speaking household, which explains her accent, and spent some of her childhood in Spain and the rest of her time in Massachusetts, but had never been enrolled in school in Spain, only spending time there during family holidays.
She identifies as white and claimed her inability to remember the word ‘cucumber’ was stage fright during one of her first television appearances, and that she is bilingual. She’s often explained how her accent comes and goes depending on stress and other factors, describing herself as “multi” and culturally “fluid”.
Throughout the entire first episode of The Baldwins, Hilaria speaks English in an American accent with some tiny inflections – which has now raised suspicion even more over this idea she’s an “identity hoaxer”. In the past, she has explained how she feels at home in both the United States and Spain, after people became suspicious in 2020 over her origin.
She’s finally addressed the confusion
Hilaria took the family’s first reality show moment to finally address confusion over her accent. She said how “being bilingual doesn’t make her inauthentic” and added: “I love English, I also love Spanish, and when I mix the two it doesn’t make me inauthentic, and when I mix the two, that makes me normal. I’d be lying if I said [the controversy] didn’t make me sad and it didn’t hurt and it didn’t put me in dark places.”
“But it was my family, my friends, my community who speak multiple languages, who have belonged in multiple places and realize that we are a mix of all these different things and that’s going to have an impact on how we sound and an impact on how we articulate things and the words that we choose and our mannerisms,” she continued. “That’s normal. That’s called being human.”
