Tanner and Callie may have supposedly met on Love on the Spectrum, but they actually almost crossed paths several years ago. They both appeared on Special Books by Special Kids, a YouTube series that interviews people living with a disability to create a more inclusive world, way before they made their Netflix debut.
Callie appeared on Special Books by Special Kids first
Callie was a guest on Special Books by Special Kids seven years ago. She featured her mother and her dog, Doodles, who she’d had for three years at the time. Many viewers have recognised Callie as the Special Books by Special Kids star, in which she explained that, as she has grown, others have tried to explain that not everyone can be trusted. She struggled to understand this and was left feeling “useless.”
She opened up about being diagnosed with Williams syndrome, a condition that often leaves individuals with a trusting and joyful personality. Callie said in October 2017, “I’m so honored and privileged to have a mom that wears her wedding rings all the time,” and later said, “Everywhere I go, I see a heart. It doesn’t matter what the environment looks like.”
Two years later, Tanner appeared alongside his roommate
Tanner was interviewed alongside his college student roommate, Blake, who has down syndrome, in 2019. He was about to turn 26 at the time, and said that he felt more confident as a person. Tanner told cameras, “Autism, it makes your brain work differently. I know autism is not a bad thing,” adding that he’s happy he’s been diagnosed with autism.
He revealed he helps his best friend Blake understand things, and vice versa, adding, “When I didn’t really understand, I used to say yes [I did understand] because I was nervous to tell them that I didn’t. But now I’m good at it, because then I started getting used to it. At first, I was afraid to be wrong.”
